Robert Landis Long

Sadly, Robert Long was shot in the late 70's by one of two muggers near his home during an evening stroll, accompanied by his daughter, after he ran after them after the initial encounter.
He wrote a nice book on algebraic number theory in the Marcel Dekker Monographs Series in 1977, reprinted by Springer in 1996, ISBN: 0387942254 (hardback) 0608089516 (paperback).
He obtained his doctorate in 1970 at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with Leon McCulloh. The topic was Steinitz Classes of Relative Galois Extensions.
He is remembered at the University of Florida by the Robert Long Essay Scholarship.
